My snack turned out to be inedible and I really could probably use caffeine only I don't feel like tea and I promised myself to eat less crap, so Starbucks really isn't an option and and and...
Plain coffee isn't that bad for you - even if you add a little sugar. It can be healthier than soda.
I keep meaning to bring in those wasabi peas I have at home that I bought in bulk. I usually also have a big jar of peanuts, but it's almost empty. Another favorite is dried papaya, but I haven't bought it in a while. Hmm...
None of this helps you today, though. Or me. Though I'll probably have tea anyway, even though I'd rather have something else.
Dislike, does not come in quantities that will not give me a headache, and honestly, I'm not convinced that "Diet" actually means "good for you". I don't much care what people choose for themselves, but I personally am concerned about the validity of the studies that indicate that fake sugar still messes with your blood sugar/insulin levels enough to cause problems later and tend to avoid "diet" foods when I can.
Ugh. I know the feeling. Some days, I just crave caffeine, no matter what, and having your snack turn out inevitable just makes EVERYTHING suck. That happened to me with my edamame yesterday. :(
So clearly I'm too late to help with yesterday's problem, but have you tried dark chocolate? It's not all that bad for you, especially the super-dark variety (actually, it supposedly has health benefits... antioxidants and such... though I'm not sure how much of that is backed up by real science). You'd have to eat a lot to get the same amount of caffeine as coffee, but I've found that a little bit still helps (and when I've made the mistake of eating it too close to bedtime, I've had trouble falling asleep). I'm not much of a coffee drinker either—I love it with the milk and sugar, but it wreaks havoc on my stomach, so I mostly stick to black tea.
I have never noticed that strong a boost from chocolate alone, unfortunately. (As opposed to the absolutely amazing flourless chocolate cake recipe I have, which can cause insomnia, but involves not only an obscene amount of dark chocolate and sugar but also espresso powder. This stuff is basically caffeinated fudge in the shape of cake. OMGdelicious.)
Ummm, you are a textbook case for the use of Provigil.
It's prescription (although I don't know why) and it's not "speed" (amphetamine) nor is it a stimulant even remotely like caffeine/theophylline...
But it WORKS, boy does it work. And it's amazingly effective and predictable. (half a pill, not drowsy for 12 straight hours, whole pill = 24 hours of total alertness - no jitters not hyper, just awake and aware and totally functional. Practically ALL Air Force flight personnel on long distance runs use it regularly and it is safe and effective. (No affect on sleep patterns, after the drug wears off, that is)
It directly targets the "alertness center" in your brain, not through the metabolic pathways, and hits it alone. Sorry, it won't have any effect on your weight or diet... Indicated for narcolepsy and contraindicated for -- well nothing except allergy to the active ingredient, and I've never heard of anyone becoming allergic to it --
