My snack turned out to be inedible and I really could probably use caffeine only I don't feel like tea and I promised myself to eat less crap, so Starbucks really isn't an option and and and...
So clearly I'm too late to help with yesterday's problem, but have you tried dark chocolate? It's not all that bad for you, especially the super-dark variety (actually, it supposedly has health benefits... antioxidants and such... though I'm not sure how much of that is backed up by real science). You'd have to eat a lot to get the same amount of caffeine as coffee, but I've found that a little bit still helps (and when I've made the mistake of eating it too close to bedtime, I've had trouble falling asleep). I'm not much of a coffee drinker either—I love it with the milk and sugar, but it wreaks havoc on my stomach, so I mostly stick to black tea.
I have never noticed that strong a boost from chocolate alone, unfortunately. (As opposed to the absolutely amazing flourless chocolate cake recipe I have, which can cause insomnia, but involves not only an obscene amount of dark chocolate and sugar but also espresso powder. This stuff is basically caffeinated fudge in the shape of cake. OMGdelicious.)
