Quiet in the office today - a lot of people took the day off.

It's been an interesting week - every department here has its own party, so I've been dropping in to parties for the last two weeks. They've been fairly impressive, too - people put a lot of effort into cooking. One party last night, for example, had a turkey, a ham, and smocked chicken legs (also, a fondue fountain that kind of exploded, covering everything in a five foot radius in chocolate - I'm not exactly sure what happened there). Another had a red velvet cake which was the crowning glory of a table full of home-baked goodies. There was one that featured mostly soul food, and another with all kinds of interesting spreads with pita and sandwiches and about ten different kinds of cookies. People take their holiday parties seriously around here.

a) Chocolate explosion==awesome. Sounds like a great spell to have in an RPG.

b) What is soul food?

Apparently, last year someone knocked over the chocolate fountain at my work's party. I think these things are not the wisest use of chocolate. The one they had this year worked smoothly, but the chocolate seemed to have to be rather thin to run through. That makes it very very drippy and messy. It gets all over everything - like the one at your engagement party, as I recall. Fortunately that was outdoors.

What I want to know is what a "smocked chicken leg" is.

Smoked. Sorry. Typo.

"Soul food" usually refers to that really delicious and terrible-for-you style of Southern cooking - fried chicken, ribs, macaroni and cheese, biscuits, collard greens, that kind of stuff. Solid fat and carb combos.

Oh. I guess I should have figured that out. I was hoping for something exotic, like cute little chicken legs decked out in holiday frocks with clever red and green smocking.

...no, I know the guy who made them, and he'd most definitely not the smocking type.

Do we have to make chicken legs with cute little holiday frocks and smocking on them, now?

...Actually, I feel like you could get really creative with that. And as long as we don't have a smoker, anyway...

I remember, during semiformals of Houseparties in May, that Quad tried to have a chocolate fountain outside with its buffet, under a large tent. It was a very windy day, and it was thoroughly amusing to watch girls approach the fountain with marshmallows only to run screaming away as a gust of wind blew chocolate all over the place, towards their expensive dresses. After about five instances of this, the chocolate fountain was quietly dismantled and brought inside.
