I don't think I realized until ARR wasn't there how much of the background thought processes of my brain are devoted to him. I keep listening for him. There's the constant mental calculus of "is this safe to put on the floor/far enough in on the table so that he can't get it", "how much time do I have left to do things", "will he try to eat this?" going on that I keep realizing isn't actually applicable at the moment. It's weird. Also, no wonder I'm so tired all the time.

Pretty much. I hadn't realized how much of my background processes were being taken up until they weren't. Don't touch that/don't put that in your mouth/crap I left the bathroom door open/did I leave my boots out/my purse is too close to the edge of the table/the plate of steaming food and a knife are too close to the edge of the table/objects are not too close but they are on a placemat which itself is too close to the edge of the table. Pretty much every action, no matter how minor, that occurs in the home has to take him into account, even when he's asleep.

I'd LOVE to see a neurological study using fMRI to see if parents have increased spatial/proprioceptive awareness.

They do, or at least moms do. It's part of why you get so doofy the last month or two of pregnancy and they think it's part of why nesting kicks in--moms' brains increase the nurturing and special awareness areas soon before delivery.
