I seem to be having a lot of video game style dreams lately.

There was one very long and surprisingly coherent one that revolved around a Portal-style gun that transferred across not time but space. It was a fairly good way to explain saves, actually--I had to keep leaving markers at different times, but if something went wrong, I could jump back in time to the last marker. Which was helpful while the evil computer was trying to kill me, and then when I escaped outside to discover that the complex had been abandoned because the outside world was infested with zombies. And when I found the small group of surviving people and botched the first couple times I tried to introduce myself, or when an assassin killed the leader (who happened to be my CFO). It's easier to get people to listen to you when you can "predict the future". From there, I figured out how to dimension door us out of there but accidentally saved over my revelation so everyone knew what to do but I could no longer remember why. It involved using a train to punch a hole in the universe. We made it to a blank space between universes. We peered into the next one, which was completely lifeless rock. People from that universe came scrambling in and tried to leap into ours. We warned them about the fact that the entire Earth was overrun by zombies, but they were like "Uh, featureless rock? We'll take the zombies." Then another group come barreling in and also dive into our universe. We tried to warn them, but they refused, saying "No spoilers!" We decided they were nuts. We found another universe that looked like a fairytale kingdom with a Wes Anderson filter. We crossed over and I did some recon--my time travel gun didn't work any more but apparently magic was a thing here. The group elected me mayor despite the lack of time travel, which may or may not have been a good thing when I ended up having to marry the local emperor for a political alliance.

There was another one, this one arcade-style and actually about playing a video game. An enemy ship was trying to board your ship. They would throw grappling hooks, and you had to figure out the frequency of the rope and use a vibrating blade set to the right setting to cut the rope before they could board. When the entire bottom of the screen had been filled out with grappling hooks, then ropes would drop from the top of the screen and you had to kill the enemies climbing down them. It probably wouldn't make that bad of an arcade game, really.

I am greatly amused that your dream state invented an in-game way to allow saving without breaking immersion. That's truly awesome.

Isn't it, though? I didn't think of it during the dream, but I woke up and was, like, wow, that's impressive. And then I woke all the way up, when you usually realize that that awesome idea you just dreamt is actually crap, and realized, no, it was in fact impressive.
