So last year had some pretty basic resolutions. Did ok at them. Got some more ambitious ones this year.

1. Start paying for news. Because newsrooms are going to need support this year.

2. Finish the novel I'm working on.

3. Decide what to do with the novel that's been rejected by a number of agents.

4. Do the obstacle course race I've been talking about for a couple of years now. Which means actually training for the obstacle course race. Things I'm most intimidated by: monkey bars and rope climb.

5. Do some volunteer work. I'm still not sure for what exactly, but there's a lot of bad in the world that needs to be offset somehow. Me and mine actually had it good this year. Really good--2016 was kind to my household, when it sucked for just about everyone else. I've got a karma debt that needs paying off--if I'm not under siege, I feel like I need to try to muster some energy to help some of the folks who are.

I also want to pay for news! But I'm having trouble finding news worth paying for. My criteria: { (1) Important -- major national/international events, not entertainment. (2) Not in anyone's pocket. This will be critical with the coming administration. I have minimal interest in Trump's press releases. I want to know what he's actually up to. (3) Intelligent, objective analysis -- tell me why this political event matters, tell me what people who disagree with your analysis are saying, tell me why you think they're wrong, make it clear what is fact and what is opinion. You can have a strong opinion and still provide lots of objective information. } If you do manage to identify news that you find to be worth paying for, please let me know!

Also, if you ever need test readers for a novel, you always have an eager volunteer here. :)

The New York Times definitely has its faults, but it also has the resources to do up to date, wide-ranging stuff. So I'm starting with them.

I really ought to spend some time with the Economist, but I can't handle them--I had a subscription in college and it's like a firehose. It's too much to keep up with and turns into a mound of guilt on your desk.
