Got tagged for memes.

From [livejournal.com profile] trinityvixen:
List seven songs you are into right now. No matter what the genre, whether they have words, or even if they're not any good, but they must be songs you're really enjoying now. Post these instructions in your livejournal along with your seven songs. Then tag seven other people to see what they're listening to.

Hmm, ok, this is going to be fairly random.

Shawn Colvin - "Sunny Came Home"
For some reason, this has been my default sing-in-the-shower song for a couple weeks. I've liked it for quite awhile, and it suits my voice. And Chuckro has an intriguing live track from a Red Rocks concert that involves a guitar/fiddle duet, and I've got a odd thing for fiddles.

Cake - "Never There"
Been on a Cake kick for awhile now. "Walk on By", "Short Skirt, Long Jacket", and "Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps" are other favorites, but for some reason I find this one particularly mesmerizing. (Interestingly enough, when I was in Paris last year, we stumbled on some kind of student band who were playing "Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps". A little surreal.)

Vertical Horizon - "Candyman"
Another one Chuckro introduced me to, and one that I associate very strongly with him. I actually had a long debate with myself over whether to arrange this or "On the Sea" for the 'Cats a couple years ago. Decided the instrumental background for "Candyman" was too difficult to pull off vocally, but sometimes wonder how it would have come out.

Suzanne Vega - "Calypso"
A Wildcats song I've always loved. Also got back on it when working on a story about a Siren - been drifting through my head ever since.

Brown Derbies (orig. Martin Page) - "In the House of Stone and Light"
My favorite Derbies song. I love the middle interlude.

UPenn Off the Beat (orig. Eagle Eye Cherry) - "Save Tonight"
The original song is fun. But the arrangement is brilliant. And the fact that the soloist has a seriously sexy voice would have nothing to do with this...

Dire Straits -"Brothers in Arms"
I was raised on Dire Straits - my mom's a big fan. But this one got cemented into my mental playlist after an absolutely brilliant montage at the end of a West Wing season finale.

I tag [livejournal.com profile] chuckro, [livejournal.com profile] ivy03, [livejournal.com profile] hyouneko, [livejournal.com profile] lithoglyphic, [livejournal.com profile] katertoticus, [livejournal.com profile] tigermelp, and [livejournal.com profile] fairylane.

[livejournal.com profile] edgehopper tagged me for 5-10 most inspiring movies. Which made me realize - I don't feel like I get inspired by movies all that often. And I'm having a lot of trouble coming up with movies that have actually inspired me. So, here's a couple, at semi-random, and with a very liberal use of the word "inspiring":

October Sky
God, I wanted to be an astronaut so bad at the time. The book was also fantastic.

Apollo 13
Again, with the astronaut thing. And the fact that the engineers are the ones who save the day - that it comes down to cleverness and resourcefulness.

Contact
Hey, notice a theme? Good movies about scientists and engineers are few and far between, but these three all do an excellent job. I like the way this one dealt with the intersections of knowledge and faith.

Independence Day
Ok. It's a fairly dumb summer blockbuster. But it's also one of the few movies I've been in where the entire audience spontaneously burst into applause (after Will Smith punches the alien).

Gladiator
Angst, honor, a beautiful man, and a good soundtrack. Shivery.

Casablanca
How can one of the most quoted movies of all time not go on this list?

Monty Python and the Quest for the Holy Grail
How can one of the most quoted movies of all geeks not go on this list?

Miracle on 34th Street
It's cheesy. It's sappy. It's one of my favorite Christmas movies ever. (The original, though. Not the remake.)

That's it. At least, of ones I can think of. I'm sure there's others, but they're just not coming to me.

So what does this all say about me?

...I have absolutely no idea. Theories?

I'm looking for new music to listen to. You have good taste. Pick something out for my birthday. Copies of what you have above will work.

Damnit, Mom, you're the only one in the family I had ideas for birthday presents already!

I'll try to remember to make you some mix cds.

So... make the CD's for YOUR DAD!!! He can always do with new music for the car, as we well know. (Oh, I'm so deviously BRILLIANT!) Hand picked music from his little girl. What could be more thoughtful??

Well, the problem is that a lot of the music I have that you don't are mp3s...

...we can burn mp3s into CDs your father can play in the car, you know.
