- Got haircut. Took off four inches no one will notice. Also, purple. It's...subtler than I was expecting? But we're going to Bermuda in a week, and it's going to fade under all the sun/salt/chlorine, so hopefully it will be a little more noticeable afterwards. It's really pretty, though.

- We went to the high school a cappella championships on Friday night. We'd gone before, in '08. A cappella in the post-Glee/Pitch Perfect era is a whole 'nother ball game. Kind of literally--it reminded me a bit of what's happened with youth sports. They are amazing--but I also wonder how much of these kids' lives it's consumed. Still, was unbelievably impressed. (If nothing else, the fact that in the interim they've moved away from mic'ing the stage to just giving everyone their own hand mic fixes so many balance problems and also has made all-female a cappella way more of a thing. The A2s carry, and there are things you can do beatboxing with a mic that you can't otherwise do.) Also, I did high school a cappella with the current president of ICCA, which was just weird.

- Officially disappointed by my daffodils this year, but the rosebush seems to have survived the aphid attack and at least some of the dahlias survived the frost two days after I put them in. And there are nice big fat buds on the clematis.

- The mice...oh the mice. We are overrun with mice. On Friday, they were doing some kind of mouse ballet/fight West Side Story reinactment in the middle of the kitchen while I was sitting there. What the hell. Exterminator is coming back on Friday. Although we just caught one of the suckers in a glue trap a few minutes ago.

- ARR went on his first field trip to a nature center. (His grandparents went with him, because they're awesome and because we can't take another day off this close to vacation.) In honor of Arbor Day, they gave them all trees. Douglas firs. They gave Douglas firs to plant at home to a bunch of city kids. What. So it's in a ceramic pot on the back deck, where I hope it will die, because where the hell am I supposed to put a Douglas fir?

I checked the ICCA winners, and the top 2 were all male, with the third as co-ed. So I think your theory is correct--it's not that women's groups are necessarily more accepted, it's that men's voices haven't come in in high school.

Also, I got a douglas fir in elementary school. I think it's just easy to obtain and keep alive long enough to give to school children.

Every time I get a haircut, I'm disappointed that it's now so short. :( Still haven't quite figured out the right way to get it cut. Apparently I have to account for not only the curl, but also the fact that it curls *even more* when shorter ('coz less weight pulling it down). And I think the look I want requires cutting shorter on the underside rather than the overside. So maybe in 6 months I'll get a trim, and maybe next year it'll be long enough...

Also, I hear mice don't like peppermint. Maybe put put a few pots around? IIRC I also have a bottle of wholesale peppermint oil somewhere that I can lend you.

Got a pot of peppermint, no noticeable effect. Might be interested in the peppermint oil, though. I can think of worse things than a minty fresh house.

Hi, fellow curly-haired person I don't know. If you can, get your hair cut while dry. I always had the same length problem and dry-cutting made it a lot better. If you can find a salon that specializes in curly hair, bonus.
