Title: The Ask and the Answer
Author: Patrick Ness
Genre: YA Dystopian SF (2 of 3)
Thingummies: 4
Synopsis: With the town of Haven anything but, Todd and Viola need to decide what compromises are worth making.
Thoughts: You would have thought after the info dump in the last book that we would now know what was going on. But as Todd and Viola are separated, each taken under the wing of a competing Machiavelli, once again we're plunged into never quite knowing what's really going on.
The fact that Viola's now a viewpoint character helps, though. While neither character is ever sure of the truth, the extra data lets the reader figure out at least some of what's really happening. Which is good, because another round of completely-unreliable narration would have been rather much.
The last book in Chaos Walking was a protracted chase scene. This one is more stationary--this is an active mindfuck. Both protagonists are in the process of being brainwashed, to be sent up against each other.
It really should surprise no one that it ends on another cliffhanger.
