Title: Blood Lines
Author: Tanya Huff
Genre: Urban fantasy
Thingummies: 3
Synopsis: A half-blind retired cop and the vampiric bastard of Henry VIII battle a mummy accidentally resurrected in the Royal Ontario Museum.
Thoughts: I'm not actually sure whether this series or Mercedes Lackey's Diana Tregarde series was written first, but there's a certain amount of overlap. Urban fantasy, mythological horrors from the past, vampires, romance writers--same ingredients, slightly different arrangement. But they're both charming in a serviceable way, if you're into mild horror and muted romance.
I'll admit that as a parent of a toddler, I find child death particularly difficult to read, so there were a number of sections here that threw me out of the story rather badly. (Mummy steals souls, the younger the better. Not much of a spoiler.) That's more my own issue, though. And I find the love triangle somewhat tedious.
But it's a brisk pace and a generally fun plot. Fast read.
