Title: The Girls at the Kingfisher Club
Author: Genevieve Valentine
Genre: Historical fiction
Thingummies: 4.5
Synopsis: The twelve dancing princesses, during Prohibition.
Thoughts: Some books pull you deep into their world, until you're disoriented every time you come up for air. This incredibly poignant, lovely update on a classic fairy tale made me late for work. Twice.
Valentine takes us to a claustrophobic prison of a mansion, in which twelve sisters are hidden away by their abusive father. She whisks us into the glittery, dangerous underworld of speakeasies and dance halls. She gives us a protagonist who is so broken and so strong that your heart aches for her. Her lyrical prose is addictive and gorgeous.
If I had one complaint, it would be that the pacing feels a little off. The real climax of the book is two thirds of the way through; everything else is denouement. But it's such a lovingly detailed denouement that I didn't really mind. The ending is left open, yet hopeful.
Note: the author is a friend of a friend.
