Synopsis: When Vlad's wife gets involved with revolutionaries, Vlad has to make some hard choices.
Thoughts: I'm not going to say that this is a bad book, I just didn't enjoy it as much as the first two. Vlad spends most of his time waffling and making choices that even he knows are wrong. At the end, he's still mostly managed to avoid making the decisions it's clear he's going to have to make.
The repetitive conversations are an accurate portrayal of someone who can't bring themselves to really choose between the moral and the convenient. But that doesn't make them pleasurable to keep reading.
This book feels, more than anything else, like a pivot--Burst started with Vlad and Cawti over here, and in another book or two, wants them to be over there. He's trying to make the change organic. And he's trying to seriously deal with the issues of the society he's set up in previous books. But the transition itself is a little unsatisfying.
