Title: The Devil You Know
Author: Mike Carey
Genre: Urban fantasy
Thingummies: 3
Synopsis: The actual first book in Constantine-meets-Dresden-Files. In which a haunted archive is predictably more complicated than it appears.
Thoughts: For the first three quarters of the book, I thought this was not quite as dark as book four (which I read first, because I stumbled on it). I was wrong--the horror escalated quickly in the back quarter.
Overall, it's clever and well done. But a lot of the characters, now that I've been spoiled a bit, are kind of random in their appearance. Some of their personalities shift over the course of the series. But worse, a lot of them seem to appear in this book only to facilitate their appearance in later books. Fix's brother, for example, really serves no purpose here except to be introduced so he can play a larger role later in the series.
It's not a bad book, but it's clearly a warm up.
