Title: Grave Mercy
Author: Robin LaFevers
Genre: Historical fantasy
Thingummies: 3

Synopsis: An assassin in the service to the saint of death tries to protect the duchess of Brittany--and finds herself falling for a possible traitor.

Thoughts: Mostly based on real political manuvering, this book teeters on the cusp of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, with a nice jolt of fantasy thrown in.

Ismae is deliberately an overly simple character to begin with; while she gains dimension beyond bloodthirstiness, she still felt a little simplistic to me by the end. In some ways, the politicians around her are more interesting. (Possibly because many of them are based on real people.)

Ismae's powers of resisting poison and speaking to the dead are cool, although her final triumph feels somehow farfetched to me--while the groundwork is laid, it still doesn't quite make sense in the context of how her powers otherwise manifest.

While I will probably not bother to go out of my way to find the sequel, if I stumble on it, I'll read it.
