We took ARR to the beach yesterday for the first time (despite the chill and the overcast sky). Jones Beach has a really, really long beach before you get to the water. We stepped out on the sand, and he promptly sat down to play in the sandbox. We were in no particular rush--we were there for him to have fun, after all--so we let him play for a few minutes. Then he got up and wandered forward a bit...and I think it wasn't until then that he started to grasp the fact that the sandbox continued. And continued. And continued. And oh my god, it's an infinite sandbox. Tiny mind blown. He kept stopping, scooping up some sand his cup, looking at us, and asking "more?" We would assure him there was in fact more sand, and his eyes would get huge, and then we'd all walk forward five or six feet and repeat the process.

Finally, after awhile, I convinced him to come down to the water. (There was a bit of a rise, so it's unclear to me if he had actually been able to see the edge of the water, or realize it was a place that he could go.) The ocean was surprisingly warm, if rather rough. I was a little nervous when it came up to his feet. Shouldn't have been. He was utterly delighted. I let him go in to the point it was hip deep when a big wave came (that is, less than knee deep on me), since he didn't have his earplugs in and it was also really rough. He would have happily charged in deeper if I'd let him. Every single wave, he begged "more? more?"

So basically, he said "more?" about every fifteen seconds for probably forty minutes straight. Kid likes the beach.

It's good the Atlantic's warmed up enough for swimming--Lake Michigan didn't completely thaw out until June!
