Title: Raising Steam
Author: Terry Pratchett
Genre: Fantasy
Thingummies: 3
Synopsis: The railroad comes to Ankh-Morpork.
Thoughts: As I think I've noted in reviews of the last couple Discworld novels, if you haven't read and loved most of the earlier books in this series, there's not a lot of reason to pick up here. The last couple have mostly consisted of Pratchett casting around to find some modernish technology that he hasn't used yet, and then giving us the reactions of basically every character he's ever introduced, with a little bit of plot loosely grafted on.
So it's fun, and very readable, if not really the sharp satire of the earlier books. Most of the real plot kind of happens off-page, because Pratchett isn't actually that interested in the dwarf rebellion. Vetinari feels somehow diminished from his original Machiavellian self, but does get to go back to his assassin roots for a moment. Moist continues his slow merging of personality into Vimes, despite the fact they're set up as foils. Overall, it's less an adventure and more a reunion. Which I can live with.
