Title: Midnight Riot
Author: Ben Aaronovitch
Genre: Urban fantasy/mystery
Thingummies: 4
Synopsis: Rookie constable Peter Grant meets a ghost and ends up on a weirder (and more dangerous) beat than he'd ever imagined. But it's better than being assigned to a support division, right?
Thoughts: Fun, if slightly horrific, paranormal procedural. As with so many urban fantasies, we spend a chunk of the beginning introducing a mundane guy to a world of weird and the readers to the rules. Grant takes it a little easier than most, perhaps a little too easily.
The tone is generally sarcastic, and Aaronovitch is genuinely funny as he writes in Grant's voice. Be warned, though--this goes dark places. There's a couple really horrifying scenes, including some deaths of kids that hit me rather harder than expected. Grant is fighting terrible things, but is still rather amusing as he does so. I don't know if I'd spend a lot of time tracking down the rest of the series, but if I happen upon them, I'll definitely read them.
