Title: The Last Runaway
Author: Tracy Chevalier
Genre: Historical fiction
Thingummies: 2.5
Synopsis: A Quaker woman gets involved with the Underground Railroad.
Thoughts: A great big pile of meh. It's not a terrible book, just nothing particularly special. It wants to be deeper than it is. I liked the description of the hats and the quilts, and some of the messed up interpersonal dynamics. But while Chevalier lays the groundwork for a bunch of interestingly dysfunctional relationships, she doesn't take them anywhere interesting. And she tries so hard to keep her character's options open, without hinting what she'll decide, that the ending is unsatisfying. This is the kind of cozy, feel good book that makes you want to see mean people get their comeuppance, but then tries to go for moral ambiguity and fails.
