I was watching the My Little Pony episode where Pinkie Pie takes care of twin babies. And the thing that bothered me was not that the twin children of earth ponies were a unicorn and a Pegasus. Nor was it that they were talking, colorful, magical ponies who ran a bakery. No, what bothered me was that they used powder on the babies' butts while diapering them and that the crib had a drop side. Both of which are considered big no-nos these days.

Entirely unrelated, Chuckro and I went on a cleaning blitz today. Something in the apartment seems to be setting him off, so we did a serious deep clean of the bedroom. Like, pull out all the furniture and vacuum behind it level of cleaning. It was immensely satisfying. I think this may be one of those "you know you're a grown up when" kinds of moments, when you're excited about spending basically the better part of your Saturday vacuuming and dusting and sterilizing and vacuuming again.

I don't think this is a "you know you've grown up" moment. I think this is a "you know you're you" moment.

That being said, every Saturday of my childhood, we moved all the chairs from the dining room to the living room and swept and mopped, then moved them back and vacuumed the living room.

Talcum powder increases chances of pneumonia in the short run and cancer in the long run, when used on babies. You can use cornstarch instead, but that tends to lead to various bacterial infections. They recommend not using powder at all now.

Drop side cribs are completely banned at this point in the US. Little bodies get stuck in them too easily, and there were too many injuries and some deaths as a result. You can't buy a drop side crib in this country anymore.

For the record, cornstarch can be super effective in cases where the cream stuff isn't. I use it occasionally on my little one.

I did that to my bedroom the weekend of June 29th: my roommate moved out, so I vacuumed, dusted, delinted, washed windows, cleaned window tracks, and then item by item cleaned/dusted/delinted/refolded every thing from my old room into the new room. That was pretty much all I did all weekend, but it was very satisfying. :]
