Title:A Streetcar Named Desire
Author: Tennessee Williams
Genre: Classic drama
Thingummies: 4
Synopsis: An unstable Southern belle comes to stay with her sister and her brute of a husband. Things go predictably poorly.
Thoughts: In the forward to the edition I read, Williams details his post-Glass Menagerie depression. It shows here. I have to prefer Glass Menagerie--while many of the characters are pathetic, they are at least sympathetic. In Desire, while not of the fates are necessarily fair, I can't really bring myself to feel too bad for any of the characters.
Still, I'm glad to have read this. The famous lines, of course, are "Stella!" and "Whoever you are, I have always depended on the kindness of strangers". I'd had a vague idea of the circumstances of each, but there is a good deal more complexity to each than I'd realized. It's a brilliant play, if terribly dark. I can see why it's legendary. I'm not quite sure I can say I enjoyed it, but I appreciated it.
