Title: The Emperor's Giraffe: and Other Stories of Cultures in Contact
Author: Samuel M. Wilson
Genre: Anthropology
Thingummies: 3

Synopsis: A series of essays from Natural History magazine about how cultures interact with each other, ranging from Columbus to Disney. Mostly Columbus, though.

Thoughts: Because these essays were all written separately and then later anthologized, this book ends up feeling a little unbalanced. There's a lot about Columbus here. Really.

It's interesting enough, though. And I appreciated some tangents, including discussions of some of his rivals' activities, what happened to his family after he came home, and how New World plants affected European gardens. I also enjoyed some of the more random essays, especially one on how Eurodisney may have gotten such a bad rep because of the difference of approach towards fairy tales by European and American parents.
