Title: My Beloved Brontosaurus: On the Road with Old Bones, New Science, and Our Favorite Dinosaurs
Author: Brian Switek
Genre: Pop science (paleontology)
Thingummies: 4
Synopsis: Science writer talks about new dinosaur discoveries.
Thoughts: There's been a lot of new discoveries in paleontology since I was a kid, from feathers on T. Rex to the news that Triceratops may not have been the animal's adult form. Fossil-hound Switek examines many of the new discoveries, some of which I was familiar with and some of which I wasn't, and muses on why many people prefer to cling to the images of dinosaurs from their childhood.
Some of the chapters are a bit repetitive, but Switek's enthusiasm for his subject is infectious. If you've been paying attention to dinosaur discoveries, a lot of this may be old news to you. But if you haven't checked in much since your kindergarten obsession with Pachycephalosaurus, there's a lot of fun new updates here for you.
Having worked at the American Museum of Natural History, I found certain parts of this book particularly amusing as Switek name drops people I actually know personally. The man knows his literature, and seems to be well connected in the paleontology community.
In short, this is a book by a guy who never grew out of his love for dinosaurs. And if you'll admit it to yourself, neither did you.
