I trotted across the street to the flower shop and bought myself a pretty little cyclamen for my desk. (That's a plant, btw.) I now have something actually personal on my new desk.

Trip to flower shop: 5 minutes
Purchase of flowers: $5 (guessing here)
Personal items on desk: priceless

My 'personal' items are my page-a-day liberal nutjob calendars. In case, you know, anyone mistakes a scientist for a conservative, I have "America: the Book--the calendar!" and "Bushisms" to correct them.

But happy plants make it that much better. I should bring in a virus plushie like the one girl has a few desks over.

$10, actually, but yes.

I ought to bring in a picture or something. I have a lot more desk space than I have stuff to put on it.

Since you have a flower shop across the street, you should bring in a little cheap bud vase and keep a couple of stems in it all the time. It's definitely worth the investment.

And of course you should have a picture of your sweetie on your desk!

No way, it's an overpriced NYC flower shop. I only managed to grab the cyclamen for that little because they were trying to get rid of them post-Valentine's Day. (If I were going straight home tonight, I would have gotten some of the roses. Ah well, they'd die if I tried taking them to writing group.)

If you stop by Penn Station on the way to/from work, there's often someone up outside of the station (around 7th and 34th) selling flowers cheap. And there's always the Petal Pushers inside.

Can you tell I paid a lot of attention to this over the years?
