So I'm doing run crew for Swimming Upstream. It's...interesting.

It's a musical PUP's putting on - new work. If I'm understanding things right (which I might not be, I'm still a little confused), it's written by an '09er (when he was in high school) and his father, originally for a workshop. We're doing the first run. Half the cast are non-Princetonians - a bunch of people down from New York.

So...the book kinda, well, sucks. It's cliched and sophomoric and a little just plain stupid in places. The music, barring a couple places of awkwardly-scanning lyrics, is actually quite good.

Here's the kicker, though - apparently the kid wrote the music and the father wrote the lyrics and most of the book. Not what I expected.

Anyway, it's about the outcast kid who falls for the popular girl and manages to convince her and the school thugs to be in a musical he writes for health class. And he wrestles with his conscience personified about being derivative. And there's lots about finding yourself and being true to yourself and not just following the popular crowd and we're all individuals and isn't that great. Afternoon special crap.

Only...his musical is about sperm. There's an entire scene with the cast singing in a very avant garde way about smegma. Which is hysterical and bizarre.

And then there's his conscience. Which is a wrestler. Named Conscience McBadAss. Conscience McBadAss? The hell? Are we 15 here?

So it's this weird mix of extremely immature and/or derivative, and actually somewhat original and amusing.

Ah well - I'm just crew. Not my pride on the line, unless I manage to send someone onstage without their props or fall into the curtain and end up splayed across the stage.

Oh, and I'm making my Princeton stage debut - as the hand that reaches out from the wings and hands over the pirate hat. For the "Pirate of Menzpants" number.

To me, men dressed up as female pirates will always be Pirates of Men's Pants.
