So far, we've had some very mixed feelings on our childcare/childbirth classes. The info has been welcome, but the teachers have been problematic. Yesterday's five hour class on childcare and feeding was taught by a crunchy granola doula who had a lot of useful advice, and some biases I wasn't crazy about. That wouldn't have been so bad if she hadn't been so unfocused and disorganized that the class ran forty-five minutes overtime. It was a gruelingly long day to begin with, and the unexpected additional 45 minutes did not help. Half an hour after the class was supposed to end, almost everyone started trickling out to the bathroom. (Seriously, room full of pregnant women.) There was a lot of eyerolling in the hallway.

The problem was, the thing I most wanted to know about was breastfeeding and pumping. I've diapered babies, I figured I could work out bathing, and so on. Breastfeeding is something I have no experience with and am frankly a little intimidated by. And that was what was last--when we were exhausted and impatient and no longer absorbing information, and then running late. (I was supposed to be in Greenwich Village at 5. Kind of a problem when it's 4:40 and the class is still going.) I had questions about pumps that I wanted to ask that I couldn't even remember at that point even if I had time to ask them. Really frustrating.

So after we finally were released, I rushed off to writing group. Came home. Didn't want dinner. Forced down some soup. I'd planned to decorate the tree, take a picture with my copy of Substitution Cipher that just came in, other exciting things. No enthusiasm whatsoever. I lay down at 8:00 for a few minutes. Woke up at 9:30. Had a cookie, got ready for bed, and went back by 10:15. Didn't get up until 8 this morning. Oof. Apparently I needed a lot of sleep...

If you need a good laugh, I highly recommend the episode of Frasier where Niles and Daphne are introduced to another couple that's expecting and get introduced to their doula and then watch a birthing video (it's in season 11 - called "Match Game" - it's on Netflix streaming) - the doula's name is "Harvest." 'Nuf said, I should think. :-P
