We went registry-shopping yesterday. Apparently, if you register at Macy's, you end up with three or four free bridal magazines. So if anyone's interested in making bride-collages, I'm totally your source.

This, of course, meant that we spent most of yesterday afternoon playing with scanner guns. I think we're too practical. We spent an hour and a half in Bed, Bath, and Beyond, and our list is only about 30 items long. Supposedly, we're supposed to have 2-3 items per guest on the registry so that people have stuff to choose from. I don't think there is anywhere that we want 300 items from, though...

But zapping things is fun. Zap! Beeep!

Wow, that does sound like fun! If only you could use them to play laser tag in Macys ...

Playing with scanner guns has to be one of the coolest fringe benefits of getting married...

The Macy's scanner guns are cooler than Bed Bath's. Macy's has a trigger, Bed Bath just has a little button on the side.

Back in 1995 I had an internship at Bell Labs where we were working on improving the signal recovery algorithms for bar code scanners. By the end of the summer, I was reading bar codes straight, without looking at the numbers. I still remember a disturbing amount of detail about the UPC code, but I'm happy to say that I'm no longer able to read the bar codes natively.

Of course, spending all afternoon with a scanner gun might bring back the ability. Or give me bad flashbacks.
