Well, the leaks have slowed, at least. We've moved almost all the furniture out of the bedroom. We pulled the leaves from the dining room table, moved the computer desk out to the dining room, shlepped our mattress and all of the pictures and electronics and most of the textiles out of the bedroom. We'll be sleeping on the futon, since one of the leaks is directly over the bed. We've lost a track light. The ceiling is starting to ooze a substance not unlike Coca Cola. I'm afraid fixing this is going to involve ripping out a wall and the ceiling.

Good lord.

Whoa! Epic watery carnage! Sorry to hear about your water woes. We're fortifying with pots, too, but nothing this crazy.

It occurs to me that you might want to check your lease--you might have a clause that allows you to prorate your rent so you're not paying for space you can't use for the duration that you can't use it. I know one of my leases had something like that. So, depending on how long you can't use your bedroom, you might at least be able to reduce your rent.

The super and the landlord's handyman were by this morning, and they're saying they should be able to replace the sheetrock and repaint the walls this week. If we can move everything back in and the room is useable again within a week, then I'm not going to bother negotiating over rent--that's "best efforts". If this starts dragging on, then yes, getting compensated for the space we can't use will be brought up.

I cannot believe your building is so poorly built and maintained that this all is happening. Best of luck with the refurb ::crosses fingers::

It's an old, old building. Sometimes these things happen.
