Pie pumpkins are bred for tastiness. Jack-o-Lantern pumpkins are bred for size. It turns out that they're also bred for softer shells. I have never had so much trouble carving a pumpkin in my life. Pie pumpkins are made of steel, reinforced by concrete. Ow, ow, ow.

That makes sense. Actually that reminds me of the "bridge in a backpack" I read about not long ago: basically, concrete is pumped through carbon fiber tube to make bridges quickly and cheaply, that don't corrode... helping out with VT's Irene recovery

Well, as much as making a pumpkin out of concrete and steel could make sense, at least.
