Pie pumpkins are bred for tastiness. Jack-o-Lantern pumpkins are bred for size. It turns out that they're also bred for softer shells. I have never had so much trouble carving a pumpkin in my life. Pie pumpkins are made of steel, reinforced by concrete. Ow, ow, ow.

But that's how they're bred now, so that you get that all-American pumpkin/mud pie hybrid that's popular with little kids.
