Chuckro's favorite cookies are those seven-layer rainbow cookies with the raspberry filling and the chocolate coating. So I decided I was going to make him a cake version. And since it was a whole cake, well, I might as well put the whole rainbow in, too.
But plain ganache is boring to look at. A birthday cake should be pretty. And since I'm already putting two cans of almond paste into the cake, why not make marzipan and decorate the cake with that?
Apparently, I've been spending way too much time looking at elaborate cakes online. Because naturally, since Chuckro's been playing through Zelda games again, the totally sensible thing to do is to construct a completely edible Link and Zelda out of marzipan.

And, well, rainbow inside.

This is what sensible people do, right? Come home from a college reunion bacchanalia that fell on the heels of a business trip and spend five and a half hours in the kitchen until midnight making a ludicrously overly elaborate cake?
Wait, you say that that's actually what crazy people do?
Oops.
(This cake was so damn delicious. I'm totally smug in a nauseating manner, but I'm really proud of myself. So, so good. Pain in the butt, but I'll definitely be doing it again. Although, next time I'm cranking up the air conditioning before I try to work with marzipan.)

Date: 2011-06-02 04:06 pm (UTC)From:It occurs to me that you've been present for pretty much all of my most elaborate baking endeavors in the last year, and nothing but. I swear, while most of my stuff's delicious, it's not usually quite this elaborate.
...although I did make a chocolate chip cookie cream pie last night. Oreo crust, raw (eggless) cookie dough, brown sugar custard, whipped cream.

Date: 2011-06-02 09:56 pm (UTC)From::) seriously, you are not crazy, you are awesome. People do all sorts of potentially odd things for fun - your potentially eccentric hobby involves beautiful, delicious, clever things. This is a good thing for everyone involved, even those of us only getting pictures!
