With the gracious help of [livejournal.com profile] lindensphinx, I've spent the afternoon going through my closet getting rid of the old, the worn, the ill-fitting, and the highly regrettable. (A combination of nostalgia, weight loss, and overly exuberant clothing swaps at work have aggravated this problem to epic proportions.) We just disposed of three bags of clothes. (After she left, I threw out another two pairs of shoes, a couple belts, and some really worn underwear, too.) And I now have several items that require professional tailoring and a dozen that require minor repairs and alterations I can do myself. Plus one shirt that is destined to become a belt. (It's a teal silk shirt I got in middle school--the combo of my incredibly bad taste at the time plus the fact that it was the 90s means that while the fabric is just gorgeous, the tailoring is truly tragic. Unfixably so. But I'd wanted a wide fabric belt, so I think I'm breaking out the scissors.)

Next time we rent a car, we'll be taking these down to the clothing donation bins by the mall. And now, suddenly, I can open and close my drawers again.

I keep meaning to do this as well. Perhaps I'll use you for inspiration. :)

I need someone to help me with a full purge. I went and boxed up a lot of the stuff that doesn't fit, but that I hope WILL fit again, but I still have many things that are borderline, and I need someone to make me pitch them.

Goodonyer for doing such a purge!

It really helped to have someone say of, say, a beloved skirt from middle school, "Are you a 16 year old at a Renn Faire? No? Toss it."

Yeah, that's the sort of thing I need to have someone help me with! I hang on to too many clothes from a sense of nostalgia, hope that they'll someday fit and flatter again, and/or the conviction that I paid good money for that, damnit.
