Ice cream fail

Attempt to turn failed ice cream into pudding = dismal failure. I don't know whether I cooked it too long or stirred too hard or used the wrong amount of cornstarch, but the custard broke. I tried chilling it anyway, with predictable results. Little bits of melted and recongealed butter. Yum. The whole gritty mess went into the garbage this morning. Total waste of five egg yolks, three and a half cups of assorted dairy, and a couple shots of whiskey. (And it still didn't taste whiskey-y enough, anyway.)

Well, damn.

In retrospect, I suspect that my cornstarch-pudding attempts have worked because I wasn't working from a custard that had already been cooked once. Most recipes for cornstarch pudding are milk, cream, sugar and vanilla, which is what I had failed to make ice cream out of. The first cook and the eggs could easily change the chemistry.

In any case, alas. I blame the combination of our lousy freezer and the really hot weather.

That sucks! I blame it on your freezer too -- it doesn't even have it's handle on the right side!

Aww, fudge. Do I have a Bizarro-freezer? Does it make things warm instead of cold because it's backwards?

I'm honestly not sure. But thank you so much for getting that "You're hot then you're cold, you're young then you're old ..." song stuck in my head =D

Shoot, now I've got it too. But then, I had "All the Single Ladies" all morning, so at least it's a change.
