Steampunk World's Fair? Made of win.
This con went surprisingly well, especially given that it was the very first one and that they apparently had waaaay more people than initially expected. They lost our reservation (but promptly penciled us in, handed us tickets for what my PayPal receipt said we bought, and gave us the coupons that we were eligible for on my word about when we signed up - yes, I know they could have checked the date on my print out, but they didn't). There were some issues with things running on time - a lot of the schedule ended up half an hour behind. And some of the time slots were kind of light on content. And a couple of the bands were amazingly wretched. But the staff was good natured and hard-working, the events were entertaining, and the people watching was amazing.
Some highlights:
- Period dance lessons, including the polka (which is simple but dizzying) and the gothic dance, which made a lot of Jane Austen movies make more sense.
- Super awesome dealer's alley, in which basically every hotel room on the lower floor was a booth. Full of beautiful, beautiful things.
- Emporer Norton's Stationary Marching Band.
- Ridiculous events like rubber duck races in the pool, an evil laughter contest, and gentlemen's duels with nerf guns. (Unfortunately, I had to return the car before the facial hair contest.)
- Lovecraft murder mystery dinner, in which it turned out our host had killed Lovecraft himself, and everyone in the room was insane. (We got specific insanities secretly assigned to us over the course of the dinner. I couldn't stop asking people personal questions. Chuckro grew terribly bored halfway through any sentance anyone said to him. Others were paranoid someone was trying to kill them, thought they were cats, tried to eat me, went blind, etc.)
- Kissing lessons.
- An amazing fashion show.
- Fire breathing.
- I think about 90% or more of the con attendees were in at least minimal costume. Many were in extremely elaborate costumes - full Victorian bustle dresses, giant brass guns, mad scientist outfits. Diving suits, blimps, full body armor. Costumes made almost entirely of feathers. It was amazing.
Had a fantastic time, will definitely go again.
