Halloween

Somehow, we managed to have a pretty good Halloween.

ARR's school organized a scavenger hunt this morning - nearby families sent a photo of one of their decorations and posted a letter next to it, and we went around finding the decorations and using the letters in a word scramble. (They also collected change for the homeless shelter at each stop.)

We watched a family movie (The Addams Family, to be specific) and ARR and I dressed up a whole bunch of his stuffed animals.

We were kind of keeping an eye on what was going on outside. Our neighborhood is dense and urban, but specifically around us is mostly single family homes and brownstones. Halloween is a big thing. But the convention is you don't knock on doors. In a normal year, if people are handing out candy, they sit on their front stoop with the bowl. This year, looking up and down the street, we saw all kinds of crazy contraptions. Candy tubes from porches, from front windows, even from the second story of the house. Boxes on poles so people sat at the top of the stoop and held out a box with a candy in it from eight feet away. Bowls left down at the bottom with the people up at the top. A skeleton with candy stuck through its ribs. Candy taped to popsicle sticks and shoved in a styrofoam cube.

We decided to risk it - Alex and I went out armed with BBQ tongs. Everyone was masked, including masks under their masks. We only did three blocks, unlike our usual 3 hour wander. But we managed to collect some loot without getting close to anyone.

Meanwhile, we threw candy from the porch at passersby like from a parade float.

I think we probably got maybe 200 kids this year, as opposed to the usual 600ish.

It was actually a surprisingly nice Halloween? Nice to have one holiday that didn't get totally ruined.
