We did manage to have a pretty epic weekend in confinement, because I am an awesome mom.

- I bought a sprinkler. We have a postage stamp backyard, we do not need a sprinkler to water the plants. But the splashpads are unlikely to open this summer, so ARR got his first one of the sprinklers with a rake shaped water pattern that oscillates back and forth. There was much glee. I think we'll be doing a lot of that this summer.

- We made jello aquariums. Blue Jell-O was unobtainable, so we got unflavored gelatin which I flavored and dyed myself with food coloring, sugar, orange oil, and a little vanilla (going for a fiori di sicilia thing that worked surprisingly well). Suspended juju fish candy and water plants I made out of Froot by the Foot. Came out really well! (Photos on Facebook.)

- One of the school assignments was...the Egg Drop! ARR did great. We made three tries - the first two he designed entirely by himself, then we had some discussions of basic physics (thanks to Minecraft, he's already got the concept of converting potential to kinetic energy). We also discussed the importance of not just testing hypotheses but of doing a thorough research review, checked out some other kids' projects online, and then he chose a third method. Conclusions: Plastic bag full of flour = nope. Plastic bag full of cotton stuffing (like for a stuffed animal) = nope. Cardboard box full of balloons, with everything held in place with masking tape = success! We had so much fun.
