A thing actually comes out
Mar. 8th, 2020 07:53 pmWe'd planned, like two months ago, to go skiing this weekend. (Originally with another couple. Only, her father died.) We haven't had more than a dusting of snow all this winter. Everything has gone basically terribly for months. So, to be honest, I wasn't so much looking forward to this weekend as dreading how this would horribly go awry.
It didn't! It was actually great! We had a really good time! It's been so long since I could say that.
- We had a free night at a Holiday Inn that needed to be used up, so Chuckro ended up finding a Holiday Inn that was near skiing within reasonable driving distance. It happened to be in the Poconos, so that's where we went.
- On Friday, we went snow tubing at Montage Mountain. It started snowing actual snow! In fact, they ended up getting a good two inches. ARR got to make the snowballs he's been craving all year as well as getting to snow tube. (No sledding this year, but the snow tubing scratches the itch.)
- Montage was the closest to the hotel, but on Saturday they were having a massive Gin Blossoms concert so we decided to avoid that mess. Jack Frost had sold out of kids lessons by that point, and Camelback is insanely expensive, so we ended up at Elk Mountain. Which was inadvertently a great decision--they have an actual bunny hill, like not just a green in front of the lodge where all the blacks dump out, but an actual less steep set aside area for beginners with its own slightly-lower lift. And ARR was paired up with another kid and they had an instructor to themselves. So he made great progress and has a really solid wedge now, and had a wonderful time.
- ARR would have happily gone back on Sunday, but Chuckro had had enough skiing and I didn't actually want to spend the entire morning by myself so we went to the Kalahari indoor water park on the way home instead. It's pricey, but really impressively huge. Again, great time had. (We did have one mistake, where a slide ARR and I went on turned out to be waaaay scarier than we'd realized, and he was a bit freaked out for a while. But after some calmer rides and a snack and some more calm rides and some lunch, he was willing to tackle one or two more of the big rides.) We pretty much had to pry him out of the one set of kids' slides to go home.
There were a couple hiccups - the scary ride, a bout of carsickness. You don't have a three day weekend with a kid without some hiccups. (And I had to spent Saturday night working on work emails that were promptly rewritten but whatever.) But basically, the plans all worked. We had actual fun. Things went well.
This does not fix all the things. But it does help.
