New Yorking
Apr. 7th, 2019 07:30 pmI feel like I've re-stepped up my New Yorkering lately. Some highlights:
- Saw the Tolkein exhibit at the Morgan on one of my random days off a few weeks ago. Wow, he could draw.
- Last weekend, ARR and I checked out the new T.Rex exhibit at AMNH. ARR liked it, but tried to blaze through it in about five minutes. AMNH does two styles of layout for the temporary exhibits. There's the zig-zag maze layout where each room is a different topic, and there's the big open space with something large and stunning in the middle and a bunch of stations around the edges. This was a big open space, which ARR just hurtled through, ignoring most of the stuff on the sides. We'd gone all the way up there, he'd talked about it for weeks, and it took a great deal of coaxing to get him to actually look at it for more than 5 minutes. It's a cool exhibit, but does feel kind of sparse to me. A big highlight is a virtual reality thing you can't do unless you're over 12. But he did enjoy it, and I suspect we'll revisit two or three more times before it closes again.
- Went to aLindsey Stirling Zoe Keating concert at Joe's Pub, where I haven't been in years. She's got an odd awkward-but-charming geek girl patter. Listening to her try to describe how she conceptualizes her music is fascinating, and very much proves that my brain does not work like her brain.
- Took ARR to the Metropolitan Museum of Art for the first time today. I had extremely limited criteria for success, which was good. He was easily dazzled in five minute bursts, but then would get bored quickly. So the first 4000 year old Egyptian statue was mind-blowing, the mummies were cool and then suddenly he was deeply creeped out, and then we were done with the main Egypt wing. The Temple of Dendur was amazing for three minutes. Then we needed lunch. A little more sightseeing, then impatience again. I took him over to the (very cool) Ancient Playground across the street for 45 minutes, which revived him and we headed back in for arms and armor. We tried to come back out through another way, but there's a construction project in European paintings that isn't on the map, and we got trapped going in circles in musical instruments, and that burned the rest of his patience away. (It was briefly revived by the Hiawatha in the American Wing sculpture area. No idea why that caught his eye.) We saw some things, we did not cause any major disturbances, he really liked the ruby-encrusted sword. I consider it a good first outing. We also spent some time playing in Central Park and stopped by Insomnia Cookies.
