Sledding

The park near us has a massive gazebo. There aren't much in the way of safe sledding hills in the immediate neighborhood, so the kids tend to pack the snow into the steps to create their own sledding hill. We recently retrieved the (30 year old) sled from Chuckro's parents' shed, so yesterday we took ARR out for his first sledding adventure. (He had been pulled around on a borrowed sled, but we hadn't let him go down the hill.)

He kind of wanted to do it by himself, but I insisted on sitting in the sled with him. Mostly because it's not actually a hill--if he falls off the sled track, he'd fall onto concrete, so I wanted someone with a little more control involved. But it's not like he and the sled combined weigh very much--with some Mommy-ballast, the sled goes a lot farther and faster anyway (and skitters less, which makes Mommy happy.) (Oh, who are we kidding--getting an excuse to go sledding makes Mommy happy.)

Definitely a success--ARR had a blast. I don't think the sled's going to hold up for much more--the old plastic is starting to crack. But it just has to last the season, and we'll buy him a new one when they're in stores again next winter.

Meanwhile, the kids in the neighborhood combined forces to make a number of very impressive snowmen and a truly impressive snow fort. Someone had the block shaped buckets you can make igloo blocks with. By the time we left, there was a waist high fortress with crenelations and a maze-like entrance being worked on by a good dozen kids and their respective parents. ARR was enchanted--he could wander into a room that was taller than he was.
