Managed three more steps in the "purchasing things for house" department. Curtains for the parlor/living room/we haven't decided on a name room. Although I got the wrong kind of curtain rods and had to exchange them tonight.

Yesterday, I hit up Raymour & Flanigan and got the love seat and easy chair. Can I just say, I hate the commission model of selling things? We were circled by salespeople like sharks. They were all super friendly and helpful and all, but I couldn't shake the knowledge that each one was desperately trying to poach a sale from the others. I felt bad because the guy who happened to be there when I finally had a question got the sale, but two others had tried to help me before that when I just wasn't ready to talk to someone yet. I passed one on the way out who had made sure to give me her name, and felt really guilty.

Also, I really hate the entire "here's the price and then here's all the additional charges on top, so it really costs X, but here's all the possible discounts I'm allowed to offer you, so it really costs Y, and now that we're at the register I'll just take off an additional 2% because you were so nice and polite so your final total is Z". I was nice and polite, to be fair. I'm sure I was far more pleasant to deal with than many people--I had specific things in mind, asked reasonable questions, made a decision without too much dithering, and treated him like a human being. But still. This is why I prefer online shopping. I can compare products A and B including their final prices, and decide whether or not I want to pay that amount. None of this "price changes half a dozen times before you have a receipt in your hands" crap.

Contrast to Staples, where I walked in, sat in a bunch of desk chairs, asked a passing associate to help me purchase it, was told how to purchase it, and walked out having spent exactly the amount of money plus tax (free delivery) as was on the tag attached to the chair. Less fawning. Much preferred.
