Advanced planning
Mar. 16th, 2014 08:30 pmARR is getting the level of reasoning equivalent to a smart dog at this point. Today, we found him sitting with his back to us in the hallway. When I went to find out what he was doing (a quiet baby is usually a worrisome baby), I discovered he was attempting to put on his own shoes. (He knows how it works--you open the Velcro, stick your foot inside, and close the Velcro--he just doesn't have the manual dexterity to pull it off yet.) I retrieved the socks he'd removed earlier and left in the bedroom, and helped him put on his shoes, since it was clearly important to him. Upon which he marched straight over to the front door and pointed, with a clear look of longing on his face. I told him we weren't going outside, and his face fell. He pointed more emphatically. Upon which I realized that there really wasn't any particular reason we couldn't go outside. So I told him to go get his coat, which he did, and told him that Mommy needed her shoes (and I swear he had a moment of dawning comprehension when I retrieved my shoes and coat and put them on), and we went outside.
He's got the whole routine down, too. We wait at the door until Mommy opens it. Then we push the elevator button and wait for the elevator. We walk on the elevator, push the button, and when the doors open, we walk out.
I thought we were going to the park, of course. It turns out that what we were actually doing was going out the two sets of doors in the lobby, down the outside steps, up the steps, in the two sets of doors...then out the doors, down the steps, up the steps, in the doors, out the doors...Of course, each set of doors had to close, so I had to repeatedly unlock the doors as we repeated this maneuver about a dozen times. Finally he had enough, and we went back to the elevator and back up to our apartment.
But advanced planning--he can has it!
