Ahahahaha. Oh, I'm just picturing how well me asking to be picked up would go. Well, I'll pack it and then see. But really, luggage to Long Island is a lot more limiting than luggage to Florida, cause I'd just take a taxi to the airport, but this requires me to haul shit up and down stairs and over turnstiles and drag it over a half a mile.
In other ideas - activities sometimes work too. Theater/concert/museum tickets, movie passes, gift certificates to movie rental places. A gift basket of interesting foods from one of the city's eclectic food stores (Zabar's, Garden of Eden). A theme gift - some kind of date-night-in-a-box for your sister-in-law? (Gift certificate for Blockbuster/Netflix, hot cocoa mix, popcorn? Inexpensive candles, fancy pasta, really nice bottled sauce, a block of parmesan, mimi cheese grater, cheap bottle of wine?)
For your dad - they just moved here. Maybe a travel book with things to do on Long Island/in New York, or a Zagat's. Cyclones tickets for next year (or substitute some other sport). A book of interesting hikes that are within a day trip's range. A guide to the city.
