I don't think I'm even putting up Christmas lights this year. At this point, it seems kind of pointless.
Also, I fail at Christmas shopping. FAIL. I have no idea what to get my sister-in-law, or my dad, or my grandmother. And all the other gifts are probably too heavy for me to haul out to Long Island.
I suggest cheese. Just buy them each a big block of cheese. Everybody loves cheese.
(Only half-joking: When in doubt, aim for consumables. Wine, chocolate, candied fruit, exotic cooking supplies, magazine subscriptions, paperback books?)
Also, note that you're only about an hour drive from your parents now. They could come pick you up, even. Or your brother could stop to get you on his way down, and it's not that far out of his way.
Ahahahaha. Oh, I'm just picturing how well me asking to be picked up would go. Well, I'll pack it and then see. But really, luggage to Long Island is a lot more limiting than luggage to Florida, cause I'd just take a taxi to the airport, but this requires me to haul shit up and down stairs and over turnstiles and drag it over a half a mile.
In other ideas - activities sometimes work too. Theater/concert/museum tickets, movie passes, gift certificates to movie rental places. A gift basket of interesting foods from one of the city's eclectic food stores (Zabar's, Garden of Eden). A theme gift - some kind of date-night-in-a-box for your sister-in-law? (Gift certificate for Blockbuster/Netflix, hot cocoa mix, popcorn? Inexpensive candles, fancy pasta, really nice bottled sauce, a block of parmesan, mimi cheese grater, cheap bottle of wine?)
For your dad - they just moved here. Maybe a travel book with things to do on Long Island/in New York, or a Zagat's. Cyclones tickets for next year (or substitute some other sport). A book of interesting hikes that are within a day trip's range. A guide to the city.
