I had a very long and elaborate dream last night. Apparently I've been reading too many fantasy novels or something. I have decided to share said dream for the amusement of all.
I'm not entirely sure I remember exactly how the beginning started. But a young man gets crowned king when he didn't really expect it. Something about stepmothers and stuff. He and his friend, who's also of fairly high birth, cast some kind of seeking spell to find his true love. It involves doing something with coals and dandelion puffs. It indicates that she's to be found out to the west, so they sneak out of the castle with several big bags of money. The king is very naive, and the first woman he meets, he assumes is his love. He immediately gives her half the money. Which is unfortunate, because her large, hulking, unpleasant looking husband steps out of the reeds moments later. They have to leave the gold they promised her. This kind of thing happens several more times. At the last stop, they are invited to stay with a local general (who's dressed up in revolutionary war gear). The friend is caught in bed with the general's daughter, and they're forced to flee into the night without the last of their belongings, and the friend is only wearing battered pajamas.
They finally stumble across a crossroads where a young woman is hacking at weeds. This is his true love, and they fall for each other immediately. It turns out that she's actually his cousin, but doesn't realize she's of royal blood. She lives with her wicked stepmother and ugly stepsisters, of course, and is forced to do manual labor and so on. They're trying to figure out exactly how to leave, since she does have friends in the village, so the two boys hide. The stepmother is in charge of directing plays that the teenagers of the village put on, which star some of the girl's friends. But tonight she's cancelled all the plays. Instead, she's having a dance performance. There's a vote coming up for the school board elections on whether to support her new proposed dance team, so she's making the whole town watch this dance extravaganza. Of course, this means that the nice kids don't get to perform, since only the really thin, snotty kids are in the dance extravaganza (the social climbing snobs are her favorites, of course). The prince and his friend and the girl hide in the wings for part of the rehearsal. It's a bad combination of the highly sexed, hip-hop influenced stuff that Bodyhype does and very modernist representational stuff. It's at the same time oversexed and incomprehensible. And the costumes are appalling. Stepmother yells at people a lot, especially the few not-as-pretty girls she clearly included because they were talented and she didn't have enough of her favorites to round out the troupe.
That night, Cinderella-girl and the young king go to the banquet where her stepmother is celebrating while most of the town is watching her show. She tries to get her stepmother to let her leave with the king, but the stepmother is a bitch and refuses in a humiliating kind of way. So the girl goes back to the theater, and during intermission walks out on the stage and declares that the stepmother is a bitch and a terrible person, and lists all the horrible things she does. She tells them she doesn't care whether or not they vote for the dance team, but there's no way they should put her stepmother in charge of it, because she shouldn't be allowed near children because of her toxic personality. She then strides off stage while everyone is in stunned silence and she and the two boys run away.
They head for the farm where the young men had hidden their horses. They have four - they'd had two packhorses, but they've lost all of their luggage by now. So they each grab a horse and go galloping back towards the guys' kingdom. Unfortunately, the stepmother was a good politician and most of the town is outraged and goes charging after them. The horses are really good, fast horses, but for some reason there are tall barbed wire fences every twenty feet or so on the road out of town. The first few are old and have holes that they can squeeze through, but later ones are shiny and new. They're too high to jump, so the three have to stop and cut holes in each one. Eventually the mob catches up to them, at the last fence. The king and the girl have their horses jump the fence and miraculously make it. But the friend's horse balks. It looks like something bad is going to happen to the friend. The king and the girl are on the other side, a little way down the forest path, waiting for him anxiously.
Before the mob can do anything, a bunch of bandits led by a grizzled, white haired woman appear from the forest. The villagers freeze, terrified. Apparently these are notorious bandits, and the woman is their leader and some kind of witch. The woman recognizes the girl - apparently she knew her real mother. The girl has innate sorcerous abilities. The woman does something that unlocks these powers, and the girl summons a ball of blue light in her hands that explodes outwards. The fences all melt away. The villagers are terrified, and run away. The three continue down the road to go back to their kingdom.
Then I woke up.
