We had to get a document notarized by the Turkish consulate today.

This document needs to be physically in Turkey early next week, so it couldn't wait until Monday. But because of a holiday, the consulate is closed tomorrow.

So I got to work around 8:30, got a couple things in order, and headed out. I was at the consulate by 9:30. I then took my number and stood in line for an hour and a half. To find out that they couldn't notarize the document until it had been notarized and authenticated by the New York County Clerk.

So at this point, it was 11. The consulate closed to the public at 1. I was at the UN, the person who signed the document was uptown at the museum, the county clerk is down by City Hall. And it takes an hour and a half to get through the line when you get there early in the morning, and the line had grown. No way in hell is this getting done by one.

Fortunately, our contact in Turkey had a friend in the consulate. I hung around outside until she had been called, and then went up to talk to her. She repeated that we need this stamped, but she'll be around until 5. Hallelujah, this just became physically doable.

I took a taxi back uptown, and my coworker hunted down one of the notaries that works at the museum. While he dealt with that, I scarfed lunch and tried to deal with the giant stream of voicemails and emails. Then I dashed out, caught another taxi, and went down to the courthouse. I stood in line, got to the front, and was told they couldn't accept it because the notary hadn't dated the stamp. Fortunately, the clerk was willing to let me call the notary, get her permission to date the stamp for her, and write it in myself. But this process ended up with me going through the line three times, and then getting in another line to pay.

Caught a cab. Back to the consulate. Had to talk my way past the guard, since the place was technically closed. Got my damn paper stamped. Caught another cab. Scanned and fedexed the document.

All in all, between 9am and about 5pm, I was in the museum for maybe an hour and a half.

And it rained for pretty much the entire time.

Ah well. In other news, I finished the shirt I was making for Chuck. It's not bad. The shoulders don't quite fall right - I think in retrospect, I should have put in gussets or maybe a yoke. But it's acceptable, and I'm pretty proud of the cuffs. They're big sleeves, so there was a lot of gathering involved, and I trimmed them with a green ribbon that I think looks rather striking.

Oh my. Dealing with consulates is never fun. Reminds me of the time I tried to deal with the Russian consulate, only you were actually successful, and they didn't "accidentally" steal your dad's landed immigrant papers...

Bureaucracy is pain...but wait, in The Princess Bride they say life is pain...so I guess bureaucracy therefore...is life?
