We got a new ammonite at the museum (think fossilized snail shell). They're usually shell-sized, maybe handsized, maybe a really large one as big as your head. The rare ones are a bit iridescent - people make jewelry out of them, like amber.
Ours is over two feet in diameter, it looks like. And fantastically iridescent - there's a full rainbow, all the way from red through purple. It's so dazzling it's almost gaudy. This thing is just jaw-droppingly gorgeous. I actually thought it was some kind of metallic painted pottery from across the room.
