I'm putting together the paperwork for a conference some of my colleagues are attending in October. I was reading through the fire marshal's rules on booth space and found the following passage:

"Effective June 13, 1977, fire sprinkler systems will be required for covered exhibits over 750 square feet. This was changed from the previous requirement of 300 square feet."

1977? Isn't there a point at which you no longer have to include the "effective [date]" construction? Because, really, who is still following the guidelines from 30 years ago?

I don't know, maybe it's the same point where I can stop having to tell the Red Cross that I donated under "another name" - my maiden name.

I would suspect it's because there's no rule on their books for taking that line off after a certain period of time, and no one wants to be the first to buck the trend. It's an ingrained system now.

This way, documents can carry their etymology with them, making things easier for future historians.

Actually... some jurisdictions are slower than others at adopting new rules, which is why our office has to have about ten different versions of the fire code on hand. That said, none of those versions are more than fifteen years old...
