So, for those not in the New York area, we had a hell of a thunderstorm last night. Woke out of a sound sleep around 5 this morning (after getting to bed after midnight, as the thirteen hour days continue) by the thunder. And discovered the windows were leaking. Joy.

It turns out that all the subways are flooded. But I didn't know this.

The PATH was running slow. I ended up on a WTC train. I got to lower Manhattan, and we were told the 2 and 3 trains weren't running, and the A and C trains were running on the E track. I fought my way down to the E track, whereupon they told us the ACE wasn't stopping at WTC at all. I resurfaced and hiked over four blocks. There, I was told that the C and E weren't running, and the A was running slow. After fifteen minutes, they told us the A wasn't running at all. Then they told us that the green line wasn't running, or the yellow, and the brown was only going back into Brooklyn...ok, none of the trains were actually running at all.

So I surfaced. I've used the buses precisely once. I don't know the bus routes at all. After wandering around City Hall trying to find an uptown bus, I finally called Chuckro to look up bus routes online. (We were interrupted twice by his own frantic, stranded coworkers.) He manages to find that the M6 runs from WTC to Herald Square and the M10 runs from Penn Station to the museum.

I hike back to WTC. I find the M6 stop. I wait, with 50 other people. Then 100 other people. Then 150 other people. People are starting to debate cabs. No bus. I check my wallet - all I've got is 20 bucks. No bus. No one can get a cab to stop anyway. No bus. Half an hour later, I gave up. I went back to the PATH, took the train to Hoboken (because the 33rd St trains aren't stopping at Pavonia for some reason), took another train from Hoboken to 33rd St, and walked another two blocks.

I find the M10 stop. A bus has just pulled in! The bus is now out of service. Shit. There's another bus ahead of it. Yay! Also out of service. Shit. But the second bus driver, who's technically supposed to be on break, takes pity on the other lady there and me, and offers us a ride uptown. Still not the exact area I want, but he gets me within three blocks of the museum.

Total time: 3 hours, 15 minutes. Total amount of time in air conditioning - the last 20 minutes on the bus. (The PATH trains didn't seem to be running air conditioning today.)

Now I just have to figure out how to get home...

Jeez. Not sad that I missed it. Though now you've made me paranoid that my apartment's flooded.

You live on the third floor of a walkout. Your apartment is not flooded. And even if your windows leaked, it'll all have evaporated by the time you get home. It was damn hot today after the rain stopped.

Well, I hope today's commute was more...normal. Jethrien, at least it will be over soon at work!

Feh. People keep saying that. Instead, it's just gotten steadily worse since late June.

Time to renegotiate your contract.
