I was supposed to be at a meeting this morning at 8 am. I was meeting colleagues at 7:50. I had the address I was going to in an email.

I woke up this morning - and our email servers were down. Crap.

I had cell phone numbers of people - but none of them were people who could help me. Panic! I sprinted out the door, ran to the PATH train. The right train pulled up as I got there. Got to my stop, sprinted to the subway. The right train was again pulling up. Surfaced by my building into a deluge. (I'd done a normally 50 minute commute in 35.) Ran to the office. Dashed to my computer. Network still down. Asked someone for the guy I'm meeting's cell number. My cell died. Borrowed a phone. Found out I needed to be 12 blocks south and two blocks west of where I was. In five minutes. Crap! Ran back to the subway. The right train was once again pulling in. Thanked God. Got off three stops down, ran two blocks. Got there at 7:52. Gasping.

Not the best start to a day.

Incidentally - on the way between meetings, we ran into ten guys dressed as Roman centurions, accompanying a litter/palanquin/thing, which was full of Rome DVDs. Apparently the HBO show is coming out on DVD, and they've chosen to advertise by having guys dressed as Romans tromping around the streets of New York. Weird, but entertaining.

I bet they're just planning to conquer us. Good thing I studied Latin in junior high.

Sorry for the hectic morning but... you win!

Now, you see, that's the difference in the way we look at things. I've had mornings exactly like that, and I consider them to be horribly hectic, but a great and miraculous start of the day. What could be better than a fortuitous chain of events that saves your ass when you shouldn't have depended on the record-keeping qualities of anything as ephemeral as email. Fate intervened in your favor. This is a good thing. And you got centurions, to boot. What could be better?

I do consider much of the morning a great stroke of luck. But it also meant that I started the day panicked, stressed, and disorganized. And unfortunately, the quality of day I have tends to be determined by the first few hours. So I still feel flustered and wired.

I'd feel flustered and wired, but exultant and positive about everthing else going right that day.

I'd figure, "Gee, I ran like the wind and experienced stress; thus, I have earned a double scoop of mocha chip at Haagan-Daaz."

Or at least an extra cookie.

I like your thinking.

So the Moms are united in their belief that I should achieve happiness through ice cream?

This surprises you?

I made it to my meeting this morning with almost fifteen minutes to spare, because the place I was going was directly across the street from the PATH station, a fact I probably should have realized ahead of time.

I spent four hours of yesterday and three hours of today in meetings. I wonder if this is going to become a habit?

Ugh, one of those mornings. My condolences. But, you made it! Also, you should totally have harassed the guys for a copy of the DVDs. I hear Rome is pretty awesomely violent, it might have been just what you needed after such a stressful morning.

All things are ephemeral but ice cream: it stays on your hips forever, a reminder of the wonder that is Cherry Garcia.

I had a chocolate cupcake instead. Does that count?

Cupcakes always count, and you get extra points for choosing chocolate. Besides, cupcakes are not only cute, but have that portion control thing going for them. Ergo = the perfect food.
