Our air conditioner conked out Thursday night. Which has made for a very unpleasant weekend, as it's been in the low 90s. We've done a lot of hanging out in the basement, which is significantly cooler. And playing in the sprinkler. And extremely strategic use of fans and insulated curtains. (The key is to keep the windows open and the curtains open to avoid blocking any airflow evening through early morning, but to get the curtains shut as tight as possible as soon as the sun hits the house to avoid heating up the room.) A lot of teaching ARR heat management techniques we hadn't emphasized much until now, since Chuckro runs so much hotter than ARR or I do. (Cool compresses on pulse points, more strategic use of fans, endless endless hydration.) We've all been a little wilty.
I am not looking forward to trying to work in this tomorrow. There's an air conditioned office I could go work in (and I'm planning to go in for the first time on Wednesday) but ARR's school isn't doing before or aftercare and so having us both in the office requires significantly more advance planning than we had time to do for our Monday meetings. (Since someone has to make it to the school by 3, and we can't drop him off until 8:30. Chuckro already has to miss a weekly meeting so I can do the Wednesday.)
Yuck. There isn't even anywhere air conditioned I feel safe taking ARR to hang out. I actually went to the mall for two hours today to replace a ton of stuff that had fallen apart (sneakers, flip-flops, lip stain, make-up brushes, shorts, pajamas, mascara) over the last year. But I'm not dragging unvaccinated ARR around indoors, especially now that people are starting not to wear masks.
So we're hot. It's dealable. But hot.
