Very food-centric visit to Boston this weekend.

[profile] lyriendel very kindly let us stay at her place, which is now shared with a bunny. We've made the interesting discovery that while Chuckro and I are both allergic to cats and dogs, we're apparently unfazed by rabbits. Which is good - Cadbury is an adorable bunny, and it would have been a shame to greet his fuzzy presence with sneezing.

One of our big activities for the weekend was a walking tour of Cambridge's ice cream shops. Basically, we hit a gourmet ice cream place in each of Cambridge's squares.

Now, we ended up cheating. We had two flavors at the first place, and then realized that was far too much ice cream to sustain. (We ordered one cup at each, and split it, so we probably ended up with a total of a large serving per person at the end.) We had one flavor at the next, and then realized we wouldn't get to Harvard Square in time for lunch if we walked and so took the bus instead. We couldn't face more ice cream for a bit, and so got a raspberry lime rickey instead at the Harvard Square place. We had more ice cream at the next one, but by the end, gave up and just got bottled water. So we couldn't actually compare everywhere.

In the end, we had servings of cardemom with nuts, bananas foster, peppermint stick, and deep blue cow (which was raspberry with blueberries and milk and white chocolate chips). We also tried samples of Key lime pie, cake batter, vanilla finger, Earl Grey, and basil. I actually rather liked the basil, but it was definitely odd.

My favorite has to be bananas foster from Toscanini's.

We cut the ice cream tour short in part so that we'd have room for tea. We went to afternoon tea at the Park Plaza hotel. It was lovely. Although the elegant atmosphere was somewhat offset by the dozens of girls running around in makeup and sparkles - there was some kind of dance competition thing going on upstairs. You could hear the pounding bass from the ballrooms. The maitre d' was very apologetic. It was ok - we had a wonderful time anyway. By the end, though, there had been far too many sweets. The petit fours were very sugary, and when they brought out the (unanticipated) Earl Grey creme brulee, most of us couldn't finish it.

We ended the day with Evil Dead II and Karaoke Revolution.

Sunday involved brunch with many people - [livejournal.com profile] lyriendel, [livejournal.com profile] katertoticus, [livejournal.com profile] nanonicole, [livejournal.com profile] wavilyem, [livejournal.com profile] hyouneko, and Josh, who I don't believe actually has a username. It also involved many foods, many of which I couldn't identify. That's ok - they were all very tasty.

I don't think the dim sum was a factor in the bus sickness. I think the stop-and-go in traffic and the weird air pressure issues had more to do with it. But I was not a happy camper by the time I got home. Not the best way to end a really nice weekend. Ah well.
